How It Works

Commissioning a piece, step by step

Ordering something made-to-measure is different from buying off a shelf, and if you've never done it, that's completely normal. Here's exactly how it goes, from the first message to the finished piece in your home.

01

The Conversation

It starts with a call, a text, or the quote form. Tell Ground Roots what you're picturing: a dining table, a wall of shelving, a one-off idea, along with where it'll live and how you'll use it. Photos or rough sketches help, but aren't required. This first talk is about understanding the piece, with no pressure and no cost.

02

Design & Spec

Together you settle the details: dimensions, wood species, finish, and any specific features. From there you get a clear price and an honest timeline, agreed in writing before anything is cut. No surprises later, no moving numbers.

03

The Build

This is where twenty years shows. Your piece is built by hand, one at a time, using solid materials and real joinery, not glued-together particleboard. Good work takes the time it takes, and you'll know roughly where things stand along the way.

04

Delivery

When it's finished, the piece is delivered locally and set in place. You end up with a single, made-for-you piece built to be lived with for decades, and passed on.

What To Expect

Straight answers before you commit

Timeline

Custom work isn't same-week. Lead time depends on the piece and the current schedule. You'll get a realistic window up front, not a guess.

Cost

Every quote is specific to your piece: size, materials and detail all factor in. This is premium, made-to-last work, priced honestly and agreed before the build.

Quality

Solid timber, proper joinery, and a finish done right. The goal is a piece you never have to replace: the opposite of flat-pack.

Common Questions

Good to know

Do you work from my design, or yours?

Either. Bring a clear plan and it gets built to your spec, or bring a rough idea and it's shaped into something buildable together. Most projects land somewhere in between.

How do I get a price?

Reach out with what you're after and a few details: size, use, rough budget. You'll get a clear quote before any work begins. Requesting one is free and there's no obligation.

Do you deliver?

Yes, finished pieces are delivered locally and regionally, and set in place. Delivery details are confirmed as part of your quote.

Is a deposit required?

A 50% deposit is expected to secure materials and reserve a start date, with the balance due on completion. Full details are confirmed as part of your quote.

Do you repair or refinish existing furniture?

Occasionally, yes, reach out with photos of the piece and what needs fixing, and you'll get an honest answer on whether it's a good candidate for repair or refinishing.

How far do you travel for a commission?

Ground Roots serves the local area and the surrounding region for both consultations and delivery. If you're further out, reach out and ask. It may still be possible.
